Focus
by JoJo

Aware that romance and tragedy stalk one another constantly, and that declaring yourself is easy in moments of despair, Starsky is nevertheless convinced he’s spoken at the crappiest moment he could possibly have chosen.

All the times past when perfect quiet had descended and Hutch was in glorious focus, he could just have mouthed them at him over the desk. Or blabbed them down a telephone line. Written him a goddamn fucking letter.

Instead, he says them when he is dying.

He goes and chooses a time when he is only halfway conscious and the world is beginning to stray.

Worse than that, Hutch doesn’t even believe him. His arms are crossed at the wrist, sleeves rolled up to the elbow, gauzy hairs shimmering gold and red. Starsky has stared at them, mesmerised, before he speaks.

“I know you love me, Starsk,” Hutch says, busy trying to press Starsky’s heart back into his chest, but he knows nothing at all. He thinks it’s three thousand and twenty days partnered. They were unbreakable and fathomless, those days, but it’s not that.

Dying with love for you here, you big klutz.

Starsky’s heart is open now. Nothing can be put back.
